In my mail the other day was a questionnaire (and plea for $ support) from something calling itself U.S. English, Inc. The q'aire is the written equivalent of a push poll, asking whether I'm as outraged as I should be that, e.g., "non-English-speaking people should be given the option of taking [their driver's exams] in their native tongue." Wow: wrong target market! So I gleefully and truthfully filled out the q'aire, indicated $0 as the amount of my contribution, declined to send even the $10 suggested "to defray the cost of processing my Survey," then hesitated before actually sending it in--do I really want to annoy crazy people who already have my address?

Two good point and one (the last) excellent one. Of the many distressing elements of American exceptionalism, is there any worse one than our insistence that we know who other people are better than they do? (Or maybe it's nothing to do w/ being American; maybe it's just an annoying human tendency.)

I'd love to come! I really really would love to trace the route, find the place on Allen Street, where Billy Rose grew up, where his father pushed his cart, and how he and his friends lived in the days around the turn of the century. Please?!

Cheers!
