Music calendar

Educational obligations are usurping the time I use to compile the music calendar, so I’m going to have to put it on indefinite hiatus as of March 2009. Sorry!

Recurring gigs:

Chicha Libre plays a mixture of Latin rhythms, surf music, and psychedelic pop inspired by Peruvian music from the Amazon. Most Mondays at Barbès, 376 9th St, Brooklyn. $10 suggested donation.

Slavic Soul Party. Brash and strong as slivovitz, these nine musicians have forged a virtuosic new brass band music in the heart of New York City, melding Gypsy, East European, Mexican, and Asian immigrant backgrounds with American jazz and soul. Most Tuesdays at Barbès, 376 9th St, Brooklyn. $10.

Mandingo Ambassadors. This legendary band was originally formed in Guinea, West Africa, in the late 1960’s by Guitarist Mamady “Djelike” Kouyate and singer Emile Soumah. Most Wednesdays at Barbès, 376 9th St, Brooklyn. $10 suggested donation.
